Morocco Aims to Attract 26 Million Tourists by 2030

Morocco is making a significant investment of $8 billion in its tourism sector, with a goal of attracting 26 million visitors by 2030, according to Tourism Minister Fatima-Zahra Ammor. This investment is coupled with an action plan for 2023-2026, which seeks to capitalize on growing international interest from major global brands, as reported by MoroccoWorldNews.

Tourism has become an increasingly important driver of Morocco’s economy. In 2023, the sector generated $12.5 billion, contributing 10% of the nation’s total GDP and marking a 3.4% increase over the previous year. Additionally, the tourism industry has created 250,000 direct and indirect jobs, accounting for 5% of Morocco’s total employment.

Minister Ammor emphasized the significance of the “Go Siyaha” initiative, which is designed to support small and medium-sized tourism enterprises across Morocco. She expressed optimism that this initiative would further stimulate economic growth in the tourism sector. Speaking before the House of Representatives, she also pointed to the increasing interest from “world-renowned brands” in investing in Morocco, particularly in tourism and entertainment. The minister stressed that foreign investment would be essential for scaling up and accelerating development in these sectors.

The Moroccan government is working on a new tourism development strategy for 2025-2030, which includes expanding the country’s infrastructure with the construction of hotels, airports, and roads.

The “Go Siyaha” Initiative

The “Go Siyaha” initiative aims to provide training, financial support, and resources to help small and medium-sized tourism businesses grow. It also promotes collaboration between these businesses and financial institutions to enhance the overall tourism sector. The initiative plans to extend support to 1,700 tourism enterprises across Morocco. The action plan for 2023-2026 focuses on offering a new approach to tourism by emphasizing unique experiences in nine thematic areas and five cross-cutting areas.

Minister Ammor also noted the positive momentum in the tourism sector, with a strong outlook for the summer season. She highlighted carefully coordinated efforts in marketing, air travel, and hospitality services to offer tourists exceptional experiences. “The momentum in our tourism industry is undeniable, and we are moving forward with strong determination,” she said.

The country’s strategic geographic location has supported the growth of various industries, including tourism. The Ministry of Tourism reports that 5% of tourists invest in Morocco’s economy, and 1% even choose to settle in the country.

Morocco enjoys a pleasant climate, with mild winters and summers, making it an attractive destination year-round. The country’s culinary offerings are another major draw, with famous dishes like tagine and couscous being favorites among visitors.
